An Autumn Day
There’s a definite shift from laying out in warmly lit, summer nights to bundling up in thick layers to protect my skin from the chilly air. I welcome the change as I deeply breathe in the crisp scent of lightly frosted leaves, cinnamon, and the wood slowly burning in the fireplace. Although it may seem the only change from one season to the next is the weather and the pigment of the frail leaves, when I look a little closer, I can see the subtle changes in everything. Tissue boxes slowly empty themselves as runny noses become an everyday common factor, coffee mugs that were once hidden away in the back of a kitchen cupboard come out to replace the clear, tall lemonade glasses, and the flavors of pumpkin and nutmeg are the stars of almost every restaurant’s menu. But my favorite change is the one that occurs in my heart. It’s seams burst open with a flood of adoration for the new textures and tints that cover the Earth’s skin. I feel revived, renewed, and ready to embrace the oncoming adventures of this next chapter in my life. And although the journey ahead is sure to be filled with lovely people, inspiring conversations, and spontaneous fast food runs (my fatty food of choice is Wendy’s), I also know that the trail will be marked with moments of heartache and heaviness. However, it’s in those temporary pockets of darkness where I can sense His overwhelming presence and peace the most. That is why I will choose not to fear the troubling times ahead and I will allow myself to dwell in my weakness so that He can be made stronger.
